Wellness Wednesday: What is a Reverse Diet?
As ya’ll know, I just competed last weekend after a calorie deficit phase. Please know, bodybuilding is not a diet contest. We use calorie deficits and extra cardio to achieve a look for one day. We do NOT stay there year round! I could not be happier to be eating more food and lifting HEAVY again! However, I don’t go eat whatever I want after a show (with the exception of a meal or two). The increased calories following a competition are still INTENTIONAL!
If you’ve been in a calorie deficit for a while, you might want to consider a reverse diet. The goal is to restore metabolic function and reduce the likelihood of rapid fat gain while transitioning to higher caloric intake.
1. The body’s metabolism will adapt to a diet, making it easier to regain fat quickly if calories are suddenly increased.
2. Prolonged restriction can slow your resting metabolic rate. Reverse dieting can help restore hunger hormone levels.
3. Reverse dieting = more energy, better workouts, and muscle recovery! Who doesn’t want that?!
4. Mental relief. It’s nice to have a little more flexibility with food while still remaining in control.
